Keeping Kids Busy on a Budget – Sidewalk Paint

28 09 2012

In addition to having my daycare kiddos here throughout the week, I also agreed to watch a good friends little munchkins for the weekend.  Keeping four kids busy while not breaking the bank can be a hefty challenge, but it can be done.

First Project-Homemade Sidewalk Paint

Corn Starch – Two Cups

Water – Two Cups

Food Coloring

Mix equal parts Corn Starch and Water into a big bowl, if you dare, let the kids help.

Next Pour the “milk like” substance into individual bowels for each kid,

let them choose the color, pour a few drops of food coloring and let the children create their color.

I like using the bottoms of old milk containers and paint brushes.

Next, let them free to create.

Often times the pictures are silly and fun, but then on occasion you’ll catch a certain 5 year old practicing his name.

Truth be told, I use the trick of whipping out my Sidewalk Paint Receipt pretty often.  It is a blast for the kids to make, it very inexpensive, and keeps little children occupied for a least a half hour, sometimes longer.  During the process they are able to practice math, measuring, hand eye coordination as well as being silly and creative.

I have found painting time is one of my children’s favorite learning times as well.  After a long session we usually have the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and objects sprawled out along my extremely long driveway.  When young kids are this excited about learning it makes for one happy momma.

Well, there is how we make our Sidewalk Paint, stay turned for more on Keeping Kids Busy on a Budget.

TIP:  Use it right away, the Cornstarch becomes very thick if it sits too long, extras can be stored in an air tight container.

Very fun idea! I will keep this in mind as an activity the next time I host a house of little ones.
