Keeping Kids Busy on a Budget – Take a Hike

21 10 2012

In all my years of watching children, I have discovered the most important rule of childcare.  If you want to keep your kiddos happy and content, either mix up their activities (keep them engaged), or get them outside.  One of our favorite outdoor activities is going for a hike.  Some would question why I take so many kids into the wilderness, but I ask them, why not?  The kids love it because they can run and explore and I love it because it costs absolutely nothing.  In addition to hikes being free, they also create a perfect learning environment and physical exhaustion for kids.  When kids are tired, they nap really well, which is always a plus.

One of my favorite “Family Friendly” hikes in October has to be the hike along the Taylor Creek in South Lake Tahoe, CA.

During the early and mid-weeks of October you can see the Kokanee Salmon swimming up the river to spawn.

There is always an abundance of fish and sometimes you can even spot a bear feasting on the salmon.

Either way, it is always a great adventure that helps instill healthy values and creates lasting family memories.

What are some outdoor adventures you enjoy?
